New (to me) Resource for Online Artists

Nicolette Tallmadge is the creative genius behind the fabulous resource for artists, The Crafted Webmaster. She has run a successful handcrafted jewelry business , Mixed Media Designs, for over 11 years.

"The Crafted Webmaster's goal is to help artists, craftsmen, gallery owners and other people in the art and craft industry learn how to effectively use the web to promote and sell their works."

I connected to her through Twitter (Did you read the Twitter for Business I reprinted from John Jantsch/Duct Tape Marketing regarding this social network?) and signed up for the newsletter immediately. I found several relevant topics as I'm in the midst of changing over my shopping cart (the main reason for sporadic posting at the moment) like "keeping your website design simple" to how to get more sign ups for your mailing list.

If you are selling your jewelry and/or art online, I highly recommend The Crafted Webmaster as resource.

~Here's to selling more jewelry and/or art,

The Secret to Growing your Handcrafted Jewelry Business

I'm reprinting an article from a Duct Tape Marketing newsletter that I subscribe to because it really resonated with me ; I have experienced positive financial outcomes in my handcrafted jewelry business by making "small" changes and getting out of my comfortable zone (in baby steps but steps all the same!)......Go ahead read the article and stay tuned this week while I share what "changes" I made to make a financial impact on my jewelry & art glass gift business!

The Ultimate Secret to Business Growth

Change is the ultimate secret to business growth

I talk to business owners every day that want to take their businesses to the next level, but are puzzled as to why it's so hard. They push and work and expand and contract only to find themselves right back where they found themselves last year.

Have you ever had that feeling? - "I'm doing okay, but I can't seem to grow past a certain plateau."

Growth is a tricky thing, business growth is a tricky thing, because growth always involves change. And for most, change seems hard.

But, change is the ultimate secret to business growth

Actually change isn't that hard, but we seem wired to find ways to make it so. Change involves little more than letting go of past assumptions and trying new things, admitting that you don't have, and don't need to have, all of the answers, showing yourself and others different ways to approach the same challenges.

Letting go is particularly hard for small business owners, it's often a bit like sending your child off to school. The unknown is too scary, so you just clutch to what you know and, well, there you have it.

It's sort of a paradox in business too. To get to some level of growth, you've got to be consistent long enough to develop some positive brand awareness, to move past that level, you've got to change what got you there.

The first change that may be necessary for growth is to start looking at change as a positive element of your success. Start seeing change as a good thing, start looking for signs of change, practicing change on purpose, looking for change opportunities that roll right up to your feet in the simplest of things. (Change your coffee drink)

You know, however, I'm not simply talking about making change for change sake here, I'm actually talking about looking at change strategically and then implementing it tactically.

So maybe you need a prescription for change. Below I've proposed 5 ways you can intentionally get change in your business life and focus on new and empowering growth behaviors.

Get Uncomfortable on Purpose! - Your wealth, your success, will correspond directly with the size of your mindset. Get in front of an audience and speak, write for an industry publication, start blogging, network with prospects, write personal thank you notes. Let someone else be in charge or take the credit for success. You can't grow unless you are uncomfortable - embrace it!. Write a book. Start a radio show. Create a podcast. You are so much bigger than you are allowing yourself to be. Reach.

Get and Give New Skills - Read everything you put your hands on. (Perhaps starting with Duct Tape Marketing!) Read your direct mail, watch infomercials, read magazines that cover topics seemingly unrelated to your job and "this is a big one" look for ways to teach others how to grow their businesses. Become known in your industry for some specific expertise and show others how to do it. Teaching something is the fastest way to get better at it yourself.

Get Bigger Ideas - Tear your products and services apart. Look for ways to approach an industry problem like no one else can or will. Your ideas don't have to really be that big as long as they are world altering. Come up with one idea this year that makes someone say you are nuts - and then go do it.

Get Value - No matter what you offer, it can be better. Heap more and more on your products and services, give stuff that no one expected you to give. Add services over and above what was agreed upon. Force people to talk about how incredible you are.

Get What You're Worth - If you do any of the steps above, you will be more able to do this. Raise your prices. Choose to work with fewer clients at much higher rates. Sell based on value, not on time. And, refuse to work with clients that don't fully appreciate the value you have to offer. You can make more space in your head to serve your clients when you don't have clients that bring you down.

So, how do you systematically embrace change?

How to Create Web Traffic Using Keyword Research

How to Create Web Traffic Using Keyword Research

Building your web page content around specific keyword phrases is a must in order to generate free organic search results for your website you must invest some time in keyword research and creating keyword rich content.

Keyword content means content organized around the precise search terms that your target market is using to find websites and business like yours - locally and globally.

There are many Internet-based research tools that can provide insight into the most frequently searched terms along with other data such as the competitive nature of the terms. These tools can help you determine the highly searched terms as well as search terms for which you might stand a fair chance achieving a ranking.

In short, the more generic the term, the less likely you will be able to rank well. The competition is just too stiff. From a true prospect's point of view, the more specific the search term, the more qualified the prospect.

A person searching for a car might use any one of these terms:

  • Used Cards
  • Cars
  • Used Saab
  • Used Saab convertible
  • wholesale used Saab convertible
  • wholesale red used Saab convertible

The more specific the search, the more likely it is that surfers will find web pages that offer what they are truly seeking.

Keyword research tools

The following online tools are very useful to help you create and refine your keywords for your website:

  • Good Keywords - http://www.goodkeywords.com - free software
  • WordTracker - free lite version http://freekeywords.wordtraker.com
Pro version http://www.wordtracker.com - subscription-based and very powerful keyword tool
  • Yahoo! Search Term Suggestion Tool - http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion -free tool that shows search terms from the Yahoo search advertising system

  • Google AdWords Keyword Tool - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal -Google's search suggestion tool based on Google's search data

  • Keyword Discovery - http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/ - an entire suite of search and keyword tools getting lots of praise

  • TopRank Blog by Lee Odden has a nice list of keyword research tools here
By thoroughly researching the important keywords and phrases for your market before you ever design your website, you may gain some real clarity in the most effective way to lay out your entire site to more effectively generate higher search engine rankings.

It's important that you take a realistic approach to your keyword research. You simply can't compete for most highly competitive search phrases or generic industry terms, so aim for a larger list of less obvious terms. If you can collect top 10 search placement for a handful of lesser searched, but more specific terms, you may actually be better off in terms of the quality of the traffic you can generate.

Once you develop a list of keyword phrases you intend to build your content around, you can create entire pages with the goal of ranking highly for specific search terms. This type of high-quality, search engine-friendly content is one of the most effective search engine optimization practices available.

In the logs

Another often overlooked place to find good keywords is in the data that your website is already collecting in something called server logs. Most web hosting companies can provide you with your site's visitor statistics, including the search terms visitors most often use to find your site. Your keyword strategy may involve making some minor changes that can improve your ranking for those terms.

Google is currently offering a very powerful tool that allows you to learn a great deal about the traffic coming to your site. The tool is called Google Analytics : http://www.google.com/analytics/sign_up.html

What to do with your keywords

Now that you have a list of keyword phrases that you want to use to build traffic to your website, you can work on creating search engine-friendly pages built on those phrases

The following elements on each web page should include your keyword phrase-

Title - Use your phrase in the title
Headlines - Add the phrase in an H1 tag
Anchor Text - Include it in the highlighted link text (Don't say "click here"!)
Body Text - Use some variation of your term in the beginning and again at the end of your body text.
Bold, italic and lists - Special-emphasis characters get more weight, so bold, italicize and bullet your keyword phrase.

Small Business Marketing Ideas and Human eyes are going to be reading these pages too, so it's important that while your keyword phrase appears in each element, your content must still read well. It's a bit of an art. Work the phrases in and then edit for clarity.

More is not more, though. Use your keyword phrases as described above, but don't think that simply filling a page up with your keyword phrase will produce better results.
