Jewelry Displays

I found this company on the web, Subastral, and I just love their wrought iron jewelry displays.

I already use some wrought iron in my jewelry booth and these would make a lovely addition.

*Note: I have no affiliation. I just really like the look of their display options for jewelry.

The Business Side Of Jewelry-More Resources....

One of the many ways that I create credibility for myself as a hand crafted jewelry artist and online jewelry boutique owner is by writing articles. If you have been following this blog, you already know that it is important to get permanent quality links back to your "virtual" boutique and this is just one facet.

Here is one place that I'm an "expert author":

Business 2.0 Article Review--"How To Scale Mt. Google"

My husband and I are both entrepeneurs. He is an internet marketer and I'm a jewelry artist with an online boutique, Designing-Diva Jewelry.

As my jewelry boutique is virtual, I like to keep on top of technology. I absorb some from my husband and his business conversations but I learn the most from the Business 2.0 magazine**. You can get a free trial here.**No affiliation I just think this magazine is a good read!

The May 2007 issue has a great article titled, "How to Scale Mt. Google". If you have any kind of web presence, a little red light in your brain should be flashing now. ;)The article was written by Paul Sloan who also runs a blog, The Key, that covers the ever-changing Internet landscape.

The article deals with getting our site on the first page of Google for "keyword search" and how that can translate into bigger $$$ for you (because you and your product/service are being found!).

Here are just a few things that Mr Sloan covers to make sure your website is appearing on the first page of Google for your "keyword".....

1. Links--getting quality links
2. Competitor Links
3. Testing keyword ads

I do not want to give away Mr Sloan's article but the point is that if you have a web presence, you must be on top of your game SEO wise. If you do not know what is, you have a problem . BTW it stands for search engine optimization.

There are a lot of SEO companies and some website companies will assist you when you set up with organic SEO if you contract their services to design and host your site. I am not making any recommendations but encouraging you to learn and check this out for your self; it will mean more and you will be able to make an informed decision.

Anyone else in "jewelry business" have a favorite business resource they would like to share??? Post a comment!

Wedding-Bridal-Prom & other Black Tie Events....

With Spring in full gear and summer just around the corner, you should be thinking of these markets---

*Wedding
*Bridal Party
*Prom
*Other Black Tie Events

All of these markets need your service-your handcrafted jewelry.

But how do you get in front of them???

Get the 411 on wedding planning events in your area by doing a Google search, scouting the newspapers, picking up the Yellow pages and calling local bridal shops and ASKING about upcoming events they are aware of....

Host trunk shows at bridal events or a bridal shop (if you can get the owner's permission)....ask for referrals. Get pictures. Submit a press release....share the story behind the couple....and the jewelry she choose from you! ;)

Is your brain on fire yet??? It should be...

All these principals apply to prom or other formal events. I live in the Big D and there are always charity balls, galas, and special events going on. I continually network for exposure to get in front of the folks who need my services! Plus, I offer baubles for Silent Auctions and get publicity and press exposure just for helping my community out!

Got any other great ideas??? Post your comments so we can all learn something. Don't' be shy!!;) We all have valuable experiences to offer and often know more than we think!

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall....

When you are at a festival, retail market or private trunk show selling your handmade/handcrafted jewelry, do NOT forget to have mirrors handy.

Women will want to try on the jewelry and see how they look in it....this is an emotional process. When they look in the mirror, they are imagining what they would wear it with......

Watch their body language closely and you will discern who is taken with a piece and who has a ho hum feeling about a design.

Jewelry / eye-candy / bling/ baubles (whatever you call them) are meant to be touched and tried on. Encourage your customers to try on the jewelry and look in the mirror.

Before you know it, you will be asking if they would like to keep it on or gift wrap it...;)

Press Kit 101....

There are a two handcrafted jewelry designers that I look up to...Peggy Li & Amy Peters.

I love the fact that they make beautiful jewelry and they share with others how they have attained success.

Peggy Li recently wrote a little article on what she uses to create a Press Kit . Don't forget to look at her gorgeous jewelry too.

I have been making jewelry for a few years but got serious about my business a year ago and have experienced increasing success month by month. It is only through scouring the web, reading what others have tried and testing for myself that has brought me this far.

Although, I have not YET been published in a magazine like Peggy Li or Amy Peters, I will continue to submit my strongest designs because I am passionate about what I create!

Here is to our successful handmade/handcrafted jewelry business....

Organization Tips for the Jewelry Artist & Retail Show

Since I first started selling my jewelry at various retail venues, I have been making lists for what I need at shows. I keep this list tacked up in my home studio and whenever I'm getting ready for a show it reminds me of all the things I should pack.

Here is my "Staying Organized for The Jewelry Artist" to survive the show!

1. Jewelry, of course!
2. Tables (bring your own or rent)
3. Table cloths
4. EZ Up Tent & sides
5. Lighting
6. Display busts
7. Signage
8. Petty cash
9. Credit card processor ( I use a wireless system with printer)
10. Business cards
11. Pens
12. Sign Up for My Newsletter -book
13. Custom order agreements
14. Sales book
15. Calculator
16. Measuring tape & ring sizer
17. Jewelry project-supplies & tools ***
18. Lunch ;)
19. Jewelry boxes, bags & tissues to wrap up the items for the customer
20. Mirror
21. Polishing cloth
......

***I often take a few small jewelry projects. It draws attention to the fact that I'm an artist and even though the sign says handcrafted jewelry they can see for themselves. It is a great conversation starter and I have often sold the item I'm working on because the customer has made an emotional attachment to the piece I'm making through our conversation.

Submit Your Jewelry Design or Article to Be Published...

I just recently sent in a jewelry design idea to Bead Unique , a magazine for beading enthusiasts.

I have not been published in a beading magazine (yet!) but I have several submissions that I am working on.

Magazines have a long lead time. The design I submitted is for the Summer 2008 issue. You can always find out what they have planned for future issues to help you create an article /desgin to submit.

Other beading magazines that I love are...

Bead and Button
Art Jewelry
Lapidary Journal

If you have any other favorites, post a comment. Let others know of upcoming deadlines and submission idea.

Is Your Handcrafted Jewelry Website Working ?

Marketing your Handcrafted Jewelry via an E-commerce site?

**Have you ever looked at your web stats for you site ?

1. Look at length of stay
2. Pages that get the most hits
3. Entry and exit
4. How did they find your site

By looking at these stats for jewelry web site, you will get an idea of the strengths and weakness of your design & layout.

If customers are staying less than 30 seconds, they are NOT staying long enough to buy. Look at where your customers came from...web search, on or off line ad, referral site, etc...By tracking back you can find out what the customer was searching for and test that landing page to see if a different design, layout, wording, etc...make a difference on your bottom line, jewelry sales!

Which page is getting the most hits? This is telling you this is what customers are demanding. Have 2 landing pages for this hot jewelry page and see which design, layout, presentation, etc.....increases your sales.

When your customers land on a page, where are they exiting ? Is it to another internal page or off your site?

These are just a few ways you can use your stats to TEST and see what can increase sales and length of stay on your website which increases the chance of more sales!

4. Do you wholesale your jewelry? If you do, make it a daily business activity to speak to/contact a new boutique or retailer on a daily basis. Pick up the phone book, do an internet search, etc...

Silent Auctions-Great Way to Market Your Jewelry to the Community

We live in a suburb in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Our local community paper is a great place for me to find Silent Auctions and other fund raiser to place my jewelry line in.

When I submit a jewelry item, it is always tagged with my business information. I also include a gift box and pink purse with my logo to be displayed along side the jewelry item that is donated. Of course, it has never been a problem to include business cards and I always ask if coupons can also offered.

These have been a great way for not only my jewelry line to gain visibility but free marketing. Often the Silent Auctions/fund raisers will write a press release or give out thank you notes to the attendees that list the donating companies with contact information.

I have had several new customers as a result of helping out in my community.

Has any other jewelry artist had an experience with a Silent Auction or fund raiser that they would like to share? Post a comment.

Jewelry Product Submissions to Magazines

Jewelry Product Submissions/Pitches to Magazines
are a great way to get free advertising. If you have ever looked into advertising for a magazine, you will know what I am talking about----Major Sticker Shock!

For the independent jewelry business this cost is way out of reach. But sending in a product that may be included in a gift guide or monthly feature, is a way to get in the back door. Your only costs will be the material used, time and the postage. There is NO guarantee you will be included but it so worth the small risk you are taking.

I went to my local library and got all the fashion and celebrity magazines. I started a journal on what the magazines tended to focus on for accessories. I want the jewelry I submit to catch thier attention and be in print. I also focused on the fashion and style editors of the magazine so I can get my jewelry submitted directly to decision makers.

I am working on several designs to submit to magazines and when I do send them I will let you know what happens.

If any other jewelry maker has experiences in this arena, they would like to share please jump on in and comment.

Here's to seeing your jewelry and mine in print!

Tips for Photographing Your Jewelry

Here are a few tips that I have learned about photographing my silver beaded jewelry designs. My photos keep getting better and it is not quite so painful as it used to be! :)

**Lighting is important. Whatever you use, it must be the same! I use two 3000k daylight lamps on either side of my photo tentcube. No photo tent cube? No worries! Just put frosted vellum paper over the lights while your shooting; it will also soften and diffuse the light.

FYI----I purchased my , accessories that included lighting from Table Top Studio. There are other similar products and I am in NO way affiliated with this company; I'm just happy with the products I've purchased from them.

**Camera. You need a reasonable digital camera that has the ability to
white balance, change field of depth and have a macro option. Your camera also needs to be stable so use a tripod or a brace. Turn off the flash. I use a Canon Sure shot that is ~5 years old now.

I purchased a little notebook to create my own photo log. Whenever I photograph my jewelry, I note what style of jewelry it is (straight silver, silver and beads, glass, stones, pearls, etc...). Then I note the camera setting for each shot which may sound tedious but bear with me. When I'm reviewing my photos in Photoshop, I note what works and doesn't in my log. For my camera and lighting set up, I now know how to get the shot in 1 or 2 takes ...I'm embarrassed to say but sometimes it would take 20-30 times prior to me writing it down because I was just guessing! Waste of time!!

I am NOT a camera setting or photography expert but here are some resources on the web that I have found very useful throughout my jewelry photography journey.....which is NOT quite so painful as it used to be!! :)

Jewelry Line , Media & Press PDF-Why you Need and Want this...

Offer your jewelry line, media & press in down loadable pdf. Not sure what a PDF is? Scroll down. I found a great reference article by Mark A Abrahams.

1. Retail customers will love being able to browse & share your jewelry offline with a pdf version. It is a great way to showcase a gift guide with highlighted designs and there are NO printing costs on your part.

2. If you sell your jewelry wholesale, you can offer retail buyers a "virtual catalog". Just make sure that your retail customers are NOT privy to this information or they may get upset when they see the pricing difference.

3. If you pitch your jewelry line to magazines, they will have instant access to media ready photos, company bio, etc...This is so important considering they are often running deadlines and your jewelry might not end up in print because they did not have access to media quality photos (300dpi on white background).

4. Writing press releases? You should be! Refer to reason #3...so they instant access to media quality photos and information INSTANTLY.

Are you beginning to see how powerful this little PDF can be? Read on to find out how to create your own PDFs. I can not wait to put this in to use. I had been putting it off because of the cost of Adobe Software but I found a work around in the article below.

As always, got comments? suggestions? want to share ?? E-mail me!

Creating A Pdf Document

Creating A Pdf Document
By Mark A. Abrahams
When you first start out on the internet creating a pdf
document can be a challenge. While the Adobe reader is
free. The software to create pdf files from Adobe is very
expensive costing a few hundred dollars. This can be a
quite an expense for a person on a limited budget.
Especially if you only using this to give away free reports
and not selling anything you may have difficulty justifying
the expense. Pdf is the standard when it comes to reading
documents online and most people prefer this to any ebooks
created by ebook software because pdf ebooks are really
easy on the eye to read. Adobe is the standard and make the
best pdf software. I will show you some alternatives to
explore in case the price is to steep for a person starting
out.

There are many alternatives to use for pdf creation and
conversion. If you have a document like Word you can use a
free pdf online conversion service like Pdf Online. However
if you create pdf files regularly you may want to install a
pdf converter on your personal computer. The way that this
works is that you install a driver like a printer. Every
time you want to convert to a pdf file you need to print to
the printer and this will convert your file to a pdf file.
However for this option most of the alternatives charge a
fee.

One of the problems I have had with the alternatives to
Adobe software is that I found it impossible to insert
links directly in your pdf files to link to a web site url
using your own specified link text. I was eventually able
to overcome this problem. Google mail has a nifty feature
where it allows you to upload documents for example Word.
You then can make your changes and insert your links and
save the file as pdf. This is all completely free.L

Learning how to create a pdf document is one of the most
important skills you need to learn when you start marketing
online. Not only can you create free pdf reports and build
a relationship with your list, but you can also create
commercial quality ebooks and sell them for a price. You
can also embed your affiliate links in your pdf documents
and create additional profits.

The Customer Is Always Right....

Let me share a little Customer Service Issue and how I'm handling it...because the customer is always right!

Phew. I'm frustrated and I'm sure my customer is very upset. I had sent an sterling silver ammonite pendant to Spain. The customer felt it was more iridescent in the picture than in real person ; Designing-Diva Jewelry policy is that if you are not satisfied return any purchase within 7 days. The customer notified me of the intention to return and I waited...and waited...only to get an e-mail saying from the customer the package had been delivered and unclaimed since 3 weeks ago. I got the delivery attempt notice from the customer, went to the post office and ...yep, it is on it's way back to Spain.

Since I never received a package notice from the post office, I had NO idea that it was even here...just down the street at the local post office. My home studio always has someone around from 9am-6pm ; the delivery attempt log says 5:37pm on a day I knew I was firing glass (daily work log) until 630pm. Hmmmm....so how did that happen??? Don't know...but it is out of my control and it just means the customer's frustration level is probably through the roof right now!

I sent an e-mail with my apologies and included a generous gift certificate to assist with covering costs of shipping return back to me twice!!! Yikes!

I would love feedback...how would your business deal with this? Do you have policies in place for something bizarre like this?

I can honestly say, I have never had a delivery issue like this one!!! :)

Pricing Your Jewelry for Retail Sale

There are many formulas out there for . You must consider the following:

1. Cost of materials (beads, wire, etc...)
2. Business costs (business cards, tools, entry fees, website, gas,.....)
3. Your Time (hourly wage)

In order to treat your like a business you must take all expenses including your time into account, once you do that it really comes down to what the market will bear.

If you are selling your work at a art fair, people will not get sticker shock. They are expecting to pay for a unique piece by an artist. At the local flea market, well it really depends on your area and what type of customers shop there.

Once you have added all your costs to make an item up, you will multiply it (known as keystone pricing) by 2-5* to get your retail selling price for your jewelry. This is NOT a hard and fast rule just what I have used with success in different markets.

Jewelry Selling-What to say to a customer when...

When selling jewelry or any product for that matter, how you talk to the customer can affect your sales.

What do you say to a customer when they say, I saw something similiar for $$ less and can you go lower?

Depending on the customer/situation, my response may vary but these are the points I hightlight:

The jewelry is handcrafted by me and not mass produced. All my jewelry is made with the best materials ( I use precious metals and authentic stones / pearls). Look at the quality of the wire wrap, bail, etc...I guarantee my work for normal wear and tear.

As an artist, my price includes the cost of the materials and my time. My prices are very reasonable for what is being offered and I do NOT haggle. I have only lost a handful of sales over price after I've discussed my points with them.

Any other artists have suggestions or comments on how they deal with pricing questions from customers?

For Those Who Can't Resist a Sale....

For those customers that have a black belt in shopping,an item on sale is worth buying!Promote your sale (s) whether you are involved in e-commerce, flea markets or retail.

I have just started a new blog just for sales, Steal My Baubles. The blog has a new deal everyday and is only good for 24 hours. I will market this site plus include it in my monthly newsletter-viral marketing (yes, that is a broken record) in the background.

I will keep y'all updated as I test on my blog, Steal My Baubles. Are you do something similiar? Feel free to post your comments so we can all learn something without having to reinvent that gosh darn wheel!

Don't Forget the Office & Corporate Gifts

This is a huge hidden market IMHO. I have done several trunk shows in downtown office buildings and was welcomed by both genders who are just TOO busy to shop. I always offer free gift wrapping, note cards and delivery options for my jewelry purchases.

Also, I have marketed to several companies and offered a variety of one of a kind corporate gifts. This was also well received. My marketing materials included an artist bio and photo samples of what types of jewelry & accessory gifts are available.

Never forget you are providing a service but you need to get in front of people so that service may be utilized!!!!

This is one HOT marketing tip. Let me know if it works for you!

Keep Your Jewelry Fresh

I know what you are thinking....jewelry is NOT produce why does it need to be fresh! :) My point is that you must not be stagnant when creating jewelry. You may have a signature line or piece but in order to offer the customer something different (or fresh) so they'll come back to see what you have now.....

Here is one way I let my customer's know what's fresh or NEW at Designing-Diva Jewelry; when folks sign up for the newsletter, they are asked what they would like to be notified of general updates, sales, new designs, etc...

The folks who sign up for New Designs will get an e-mail with the new design and a discount for a limited time. I know people like these for two reasons:my e-mail stats and the fact if I don't have a fresh/new idea at least once a month I get e-mails say where's the new design sneak preview.

For those of you who don't have a website, make sure that your display a retail event/markets highlights "What's New". Create interest for returning customers and new customers alike.

The other thing you can do to keep your jewelry fresh is important as well. Invest in your education; learn new skills. I started out just straight beading with my business. I have added the following skills to my repertoire:

1. Crocheting with 26-28 guage silver wire

2. Wire Wrap Techniques

3. Viking Knit

4. Chain Maille techniques

5. Fused & Dichroic Glass

6. Metalsmithing

7. Lampwork glass beads

What does this mean? I can offer truly ORIGINAL designs to my customers.

5 Ideas for Packaging Your Jewelry

Here are 5 tips for packaging your jewelry that I have had great success with at private trunk shows and retail markets. Use your imagination and creative juices to come up with packaging ideas of your own that will pack a punch and have customers lining up!

1. Colored Kraft Boxes are awesome. I use my scrap booking supplies (stamps, die cuts and stickers) to create "seasonal" packaging that packs a punch but not on my budget.

2. Colored glossy lunch bags with tissue paper. These are just too cute and I close them with pretty ribbon (use a hole punch) and a hand crafted note card.

3. Trinket Boxes. I scour Dollar stores and flea markets for inexpensive trinket boxes that match my business color/logo/style. For my higher end pieces, I display the jewelry with the trinket box and it's a huge hit at private trunk shows.

4. Stainless Steel Tins with tissue or shredded paper are great if your jewelry is contemporary or if you also sell jewelry for men.

5. Think outside the box. Here are just a few great ideas:
****At Easter, I had earrings to go in plastic colored eggs in a darling basket with a sign, "Easter Earrings: Buy 1 for $15 or 2 for $25). Many people purchased without even opening the egg because they wanted to be surprised!
****At Christmas, I had Christmas balls decorated with jewelry displayed inside.

5 Places to Sell Your Jewelry

These are great places to start selling your handcrafted jewelry creations:

  • Host a Trunk Show in your home and invite family and friends. Is it a hit? Offer an incentive to the next person who hosts a trunks show (% of the proceeds towards FREE jewelry)

  • Approach Salon or Local Boutique and ask if they would be interested in a private trunk show for their customers with the salon/boutique receiving ~ 20% of the proceeds.

  • Festivals often have vendors and bread and butter items (under $15) will sell well.

  • The office lunch trunk show is often a huge hit.

  • Website with shopping cart

Hold a Contest & Write a Press Release

Did you check out Designing-Diva Jewelry's (DDJ's) jewelry contest, "Mom Rocks", press release?

**When you look at the original press release, does the headline grab you?

**What is the point of the press release?

**Does the press release sound like an ad?

Can anyone tell me , why I asked those questions and why they are important? I'm waiting for those lurkers to comment! :)

Back to the Basics-What is Marketing ?

    The definition of marketing:

the commercial processes involved in promoting and selling and distributing a product or service

5 Business Actitivities You Must Do Consistently to Grow your Jewelry Business

    1. Get in front of customers every day. For me that means, I advertise online and offline to drive customers to my online jewelry boutique.
**I post for FREE everyday in Craigs List
    **I have Google Ads
**I hand business cards out everywhere I go because I "wear" my business and get comments all the time.
    **I submit online press releases
**I submit articles to my local paper

    2. I add a new offline or online venue to contact every single day. I call mid-upscale boutiques ( the newspaper is a great resource) and ask to speak to the owner or retail buyer; this is how, I have attained several wholesale accounts. I also search other venues online that I can write an article for in exchange for a link, or a place that I can post a blurb (social networking sites) about what I do, etc...

    3. Ask for a Referral. Whenever I have a customer, I always tell them if you love the jewelry,

    Tell your Friends
. Another example of viral marketing (yes, I do sound like a broken record).

    4. Customer Service Excellence: offer the best customer service starting with their shopping experience, checkout and impression of your jewelry (package and display). But it doesn't stop there, keep in touch with your customers ( I use e-mail) and I offer Customer Rewards (Diva Bucks, private sales and trunks shows).

5.LISTEN to your Customers: if you just listen, they will tell you what you could do to improve and if they don't ASK.
Is there anything that we could be doing better? Did we meet your expectations?
These are just a few ways to get feedback. If you do get negative feedback, do NOT react. Write it down and look at what they have said. Is it an angry customer or is it a valid point? If it is valid, you better change and quick because it could be hurting your business.

In order to have a successful jewelry business, you must do these 5 activities consistently.

If you found this information helpful or if you have soemthing to add, post a comment. If you would like to see other topics covered, post that too.

HOT Jewelry Marketing Tip: Offer a Gift Guide & Market It

This jewelry marketing tip is HOT. Offer a one page gift guide for special occasions like Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Grad 2007, Holiday 2007. This is also a great idea for your seasonal collections: Spring 2007 Gift Guide, etc...What's your best seller? Have a "What's Hot Guide" and feature your business's best sellers.

Here are just a few things to consider for your gift guide:
*Break it down by price (e.g. gifts under $25,$ 50, etc..)
*Break it down by color or style
*Make sure your descriptions include a call to action
    *clear photos of your items
*where to buy/shop/purchase your jewelry product
    *a discount if applicable
*your contact information with logo (for branding if applicable)

My one page gift guides are "electronic". I do NOT go the printers because it is expensive and not really necessary; I put it up on my website and promote it. I e-mail the gift guide to my customers (you should be in touch with your customers in some way),my local newspaper and magazines (the lifestyle section and fashion section may be looking to fill some blank space and voila you have just received FREE publicity that would have cost you $$$) and local retail boutiques ( I have a list of retail buyers whom I keep in touch with) who may be looking for new stock and haven't been to the wholesale market yet.

My customers look forward to my gift guides and often forward them to friends and family ---viral marketing at work. I often used voucher codes for my gift guides so I can track their success which helps me tweak my presentation, description and call to action.

Have fun with your gift guide and here's to your jewelry marketing success.

Jewelry Display-Is Yours What It Could Be ?

This picture should be titled, "How NOT to display your Jewelry" and here are just a few reasons why:
*jewelry on the table...most customers won't even see it if it not at eye height
*jewelry display is cluttered...the eye is confused and does NOT know where to look
    *poor lighting
*basically it looks more like a flea market than a boutique
    *no signage
*no cohesive display technique-pendants, necklace & earrings are displayed all together

In this next picture, take note of a couple things:
    *the jewelry is the focus
*the jewelry is at eye height and off the table
    *each piece is easily seen

    What's missing?
    *good lighting
    *sign to draw attention

Do you see how your display can make a big impression on the buyer? Where would you rather shop? At the clean or cluttered displayed booth?

    Controversy Sells

Have you heard of Blood Diamonds? I'm sure you have. Why? Controversy sells!

Controversy does not have to be negative but just a different slant to what is already out in the media. Let's say you read an article about fashion jewelry sales are up; write an article or press release on why people are throwing their money away and why fine jewelry is an investment.

Remember, the goal is to sell more product but the press release or article must NOT read like an ad or it will NOT be published. It will end up in the trash basket and NOT in print!

What kind of controversy can you stir up to sell your product?

    Introduction to Viral Marketing

Write an article, promote it and as others read it and pass it on, you become a credible business and expert on XYZ. Include links in your article so they can find you, your product and business.

Here is a marketing article that I wrote and submitted to Ezine Articles. This is now archived on the web and has several permanent links with my bio and website information at the bottom.

    Web 2.0 Buzz-Squidoo

Web 2.0 in a nutshell is social networking via blogs. Squidoo is a great starting point. Create a lens on a topic that you are passionate about. For me, that is handcrafted jewelry.
My Squidoo page is all about handcrafted jewelry:
Techniques-beading, wire wrapping, chain maille, glass, art clay, crochet , viking knit and metal smithing
Shopping Resources: where to get beading supplies and tools
Interesting Stuff: I've shared books, magazines and products that may be of interest to a person who handcrafts jewelry or wants to get started
Links: links to my jewelry boutique, my blog and other things of interest

Make it interesting and someone will read it and hopefully share it (this is known as viral marketing).

So, go Squidoo, it's free and it's a way to establish yourself as an expert on_____!

How to Get Publicity for your Jewelry Business-Write a Press Release

Sooner or later you are going to have to learn how to write and submit a press release. Why? Free publicity!

There are several places to learn about writing a press release and how to format (just do a Google search and you will find what you are looking for).

Once you have a sample press release, read it again and have someone else read it. When you read the headline, ask yourself, "Who Cares?" If you can't answer that question, rewrite the headline. The headline is the attention grabber so you should spend more time on that than anything else (80% on headline and 20% on body. Look at newspapers and magazines. What headlines grab your attention and make you want to read? Yep, more homework for you.

Make sure you can get to the point in 2-3 sentences. If you can NOT, go back to the drawing board. The press release needs to get to the point and quickly if it is going to make it past the journalist's desk and not end up in the wastebasket!

Give the press release credibility by having a quote from you commenting on the topic.

Your call to action is very important; make sure you tell people to shop online at ----- or to buy----shop at ------. If you do not tell them what to do, they won't do it!

When submitting a press release to a newspaper or magazine, include your bio and company's background. If they have any questions, this extra information should assist them. Ensure your contact information is accurate in case they want to follow up with an interview! Yes, it happens all the time.

Don't forget to submit your PR online as well so it may be archived. Whenever someone searches for your business, they will find a press release which gives your jewelry biz credibility and establishes your company as a solution!

So, what are you waiting for, do a little homework and get to that press release!

If you have a website, make sure you have a page for media and press. Check out Designing-Diva Jewelry's press and media page. Note, I have my press releases and articles archived. I have made it easy for the media to gather information about my jewelry business and myself by having all the information accessible in ONE place!
